Highlights
  • Apple refreshed the AirPods Pro lineup last year with some incremental changes
  • The company is also under regulatory pressure in Europe to make USB-C iPhones
  • A handful of Apple products already come with a USB-C port

Some new hints have dropped about upcoming Apple hardware, courtesy of the iOS 16.4 developer preview released earlier this month. As per a well-known source of Apple information, Ming Chi-Kuo, the manufacturer, is preparing to launch new AirPods with a USB-C port to replace the existing Lightning port.

This could be part of the company’s broader plans to switch to USB-C, largely driven by new common charger legislation passed by the European Commission, requiring manufacturers of a majority of electronics to use a common charger, i.e., USB-C. While Apple already offers USB-C on some of its iPads and Macs, it has largely resisted the inclusion of the port on its iPhones.

A few days ago, developer and Twitter user @aaronp613 shared two model numbers found within iOS 16.4 dev preview containing references to A3048 and A2968 for the AirPods and its charging case, respectively. Kuo later responded to this tweet and offered more information, saying that this is possibly the new AirPods Pro with a USB-C port.

It’s unclear how this variant would differ from last year’s AirPods Pro refresh, barring the addition of the USB-C port on the wireless charging case. Kuo says the AirPods Pro lineup will be the first to switch to USB-C, with the basic non-ANC AirPods supposedly sticking to the existing Lightning solution. As for availability, the USB-C toting AirPods Pro will arrive sometime between the second and third quarters of 2023, Kuo said.
