Apple Reportedly Working on an Affordable Version of Vision Pro Headset: Here’s What to Expect

During the WWDC 2023 event, Apple unveiled Vision Pro, a cutting-edge device equipped with advanced features such as gesture controls and dual twin 4K microLED virtual reality displays. However, the device’s substantial price tag of $3,499 (approximately Rs 2.9 lakh) has drawn criticism from both consumers and experts.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, there is good news for those interested in Apple’s Vision Pro technology. Gurman reports that Apple is already in the process of developing a more affordable version of the device, which is expected to be introduced to the market within the next couple of years. This development suggests that Apple is aiming to make advanced technology more accessible to a broader range of consumers in the near future.

“At $3,500, Apple Inc.’s Vision Pro isn’t priced to sell. No matter how powerful its technology and compelling its functionality, the product won’t be able to reach its potential or have a real future at seven times the price of its top rival,” writes Gurman in his latest PowerOn newsletter.

According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple is not only working on a more affordable version of the Vision Pro headset but also speculates that it might be named “Apple Vision” or “Apple Vision One.” This indicates that Apple aims to expand its market reach by offering a non-“Pro” variant of the headset, potentially attracting a wider consumer base and increasing unit sales. The introduction of a non-Pro version aligns with Apple’s strategy to make their advanced technology more accessible and cater to varying budget preferences.

Mark Gurman suggests that Apple’s strategy to reduce the cost of the more affordable version of the headset involves several measures. One possibility is the use of lower-quality screens compared to the high-end Vision Pro model. Additionally, Apple might opt for either an iPhone-grade chip or an older Mac chip instead of the latest, cutting-edge processor for the device. To further reduce costs, the cheaper AR/VR headset may feature fewer cameras, resulting in slightly diminished performance compared to the premium version.

In terms of design, Gurman speculates that the affordable version may come with a simpler headband design, potentially different from the strap with integrated speakers found in the Vision Pro. Instead of built-in speakers, users might be required to use AirPods for spatial audio, providing a more cost-effective solution. These measures collectively aim to bring down the overall cost of the device while still delivering a compelling augmented and virtual reality experience.
