Google Pixel 7a’s Tensor G2 is different from the chipset that powers the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, reveals tipster Kamila Wojciechowska in a Twitter thread. To recall, Google unveiled the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones with its flagship chip, the Tensor G2, in October 2022. In May of this year, the brand announced the Pixel 7a with Tensor G2 onboard. It was surprising to see the same flagship power, the Pixel 7 duo, as well as the Pixel 7a, which is a mid-range phone.

The aforementioned tipster has now revealed that the Pixel 7a has a revised version of the Tensor G2 chip. Continue reading ahead to learn about the details of the Pixel 7a’s chip revealed by the tipster.

Google Pixel 7a seems to have Tensor G2’s restrained version

According to the tipster, the Pixel 7a’s Tensor G2 makes use of a newer and custom form of packaging dubbed IPOP. In contrast, the Tensor G2, which belongs to the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, utilises Samsung’s proprietary packaging technology called the FOPLP-PoP. According to Samsung, IPOP is thicker, larger, and generates more heat as compared to FOPLP.

This might be the cause of the Pixel 7a’s increased heat when used outdoors in tropical nations like India during the summer. There have been multiple reports on social platforms where people have claimed that the Pixel 7a is hotter than the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. At present, there is no official word from Google on why it opted for what looks like a restrained version of the G2 chip to power the Pixel 7a.

Google has also used the Tensor G2 to power the Pixel Fold and the Pixel Tablet. It is unclear whether it features the same Tensor G2 variant that powers the Pixel 7 duo or the revised version that is available inside the Pixel 7a. Since the Pixel Fold is a premium product, it is likely to be equipped with the regular version of the G2 chip.
