Highlights
  • A renowned Apple analyst has claimed that the company has resumed the development of the 4th-gen iPhone SE
  • Apple was previously rumoured to have halted development on the budget-friendly iPhone
  • The iPhone SE refresh is expected to launch in the first half of 2024

The iPhone SE lineup has been moderately successful for Apple, especially in emerging markets. However, reports from the past couple of years have been underwhelming, leading to talk about the iPhone manufacturer ditching the fourth-generation model of the mid-ranger. A leading industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo now claims the company has resumed working on the iPhone SE 4, potentially targeting a 2024 release.

Kuo says the 4th-gen iPhone SE will feature a 5G chip developed in-house by Apple, leveraging the 4nm process. However, the analyst claims that this chipset only supports sub-6 GHz 5G bands as of now. There’s still uncertainty about whether Apple will use its new 4nm chip for upcoming iPhones, such as next year’s iPhone 16.

The current set of iPhones, including the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max, use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X65 chip for snappier 5G speeds. But this partnership may not be a longstanding one, per Kuo, as Apple looks to reduce dependency on Qualcomm. The analyst further says that Apple may even consider using its new 5G chip on the Apple Watch and iPad lineup next year, based on the success of the iPhone SE 4 in the first half of 2024.

It’s worth pointing out that Kuo previously reported that Apple had cancelled plans to launch the iPhone SE 4 owing to low demand. But it seems like the manufacturer has had a change of strategy towards its low-cost iPhone. Phones like the iPhone 13 mini lineup didn’t fare too well for Apple either, so perhaps it would help for the company to have just one small-sized iPhone.

Kuo also seems to have some early idea about the iPhone SE 4’s hardware, claiming it would only feature small changes from the entry-level iPhone 14, which has a 6.1-inch OLED screen. The analyst also claims Apple will use an OLED screen on the iPhone SE 4 instead of an LCD panel as previously rumoured.

A lot of changes expected from this year’s iPhone refresh

Despite Apple’s best efforts, reports and leaks related to the iPhone 15 lineup show no signs of slowing down. We’ve already come across multiple CAD renders of the iPhone 15 series, telling us that Dynamic Island would be a common feature across the entirety of the 2023 iPhone portfolio. We were also treated to the colour options that Apple would offer for the iPhone 15 Pro.

We’ve also learned about the presence of a USB-C port on the new iPhone flagships following years of reluctance to make the switch. The frequency of leaks and rumours are only going to increase as we inch closer towards September 2023, when the company is likely to reveal the new set of iPhones, including the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, while there’s also talk of an Ultra version being in the pipeline.
